I’ve been eyeing up a gaming headset for a while. I wanted something that looked good, sounded good, and was functional for more than gaming. Those requirements led me to the Astro A30’s, which I was lucky enough to have sitting under my Christmas tree this year. Specifically, the Penny Arcade Edition. I did look at some of the models from Turtle Beach, Creative, and Tritton. However, they were too purpose built from gaming, and I didn’t think they would also work out in the real world.
I want to post a full review, but I am still waiting for the wireless mixamp to arrive. So, in the meantime, I want to share some of my first impressions. These headphones sound good, real good. I’ve tested them out while playing games, listening to music, and watching movies. The A30’s are a little bass heavy, so if that is your thing, rock on.
One of the things I really enjoy about the Astro headsets is their versatility. Some of the competing products will work only with one kind of console or only with the PC. The A30’s work with all consoles, PCs, mobile devices, phones, iPods … you see where I am going.
Once I get the mixamp, I will post my completes thoughts on the A30’s, but in the meantime, I would give the A30’s a recommendation.
