I’m a new gamer to the Uncharted series. I watched my fiancé play both the 1st and the 2nd installments, but Uncharted 3 is my first time playing one of these games. I felt like I knew what I was getting myself into and followed most of the story because of watching someone else play the earlier games. It’s kind of like those people who read the last chapter of a book before starting it. So far, Uncharted 3 makes me want to play the other two installments badly. That is a good sign as some games lose their luster after the first or second. Below I put together a list of reasons why I love Uncharted 3. I hope that it compels others to play it if they haven’t already:
1. Nathan Drake is a good looking human.
Many games have a hero/heroin that is unrealistically proportioned or some alien/creature. While those characters are awesome and great for what they are, I love how many games are introducing more normal but attractive people. This is also important for good cosplay ventures.
2. Nathan is the modern day Indiana Jones I get to control!
Indiana Jones was awesome. The original movies were great for adventure and history kicks but the new one feel short and should have not happened. I hope the fourth game doesn’t fall to that same evil as the movies, but I don’t see that happening. The great thing about how they can keep going and not bring up alien bullshit or bad plots is that there is so much history and stories they can tap into. This game focuses on a vendetta for Drake to prove he can find this place he has been sure exists for 20 years. But who’s to say he doesn’t have other white whale expeditions up his sleeve?! I say keep going if you can have the same compelling story and mix in some actual history. That is what people want. Assassins Creed anyone?
3. You don’t know where the cut scenes end and the game play starts.
When Nathan is talking or there is a cut scene he is very dramatic and moves around like a real person should. When they scene is over and it is game play time, he actually moves around and doesn’t just walk or run. If he is tired he stumbles or trips. If he is trips he has to regain his balance. A great game makes you feel like you are the character and with these subtle game play attributes, it really helps you get engrossed in the game. Plus, it can be annoying to have these amazing cinematic scenes (beautiful as they may be) and then have to cut to actual game play and be disappointed it doesn’t look that good all the time.
4. You can play co-op.
As someone who shares a TV and a system with someone else, it can be hard trying to play the same game and find time to take turns. Co-op is great for couples/friends to be able to play games together. Games are almost always more fun when you have someone else to play them with you.
5. The game starts off with prequel game play.
I really enjoy prequels. Either in movies, games or books, they help build the story and foundation for what you are experiencing now. The beginning of the third game has just the right amount of prequel. You find out the why Drake is hell bent on this mission and how he came to know Sully. Drake was an adorable tween and fun to play.
6. The game play and combat systems are a variety of fun.
Firstly, Nathan is the champion of all parkour. He can climb up almost anything, leap across dangerous pits and swing across ocean liners on chains. Plus to make things better he can shoot bad guys with a plethora of guns or beat the shit out of them in hand to hand combat. Nathan can do so many things we all wish we could do. Many games also just focus on one or two of these things and make them really complex. Not Uncharted. I don’t need a complex fighting system, just one that works and lets me do more than just punch someone. Uncharted gives me that plus other useful skills.
7. The story…it rocks.
I don’t want to spoil anything for anyone but if you played the other Uncharted games you know they try to give the player a worth-while story. Following artifact to artifact and country to country, the plot really sucks you in. It also helps that Drake seems especially invested in this adventure. The game builds and builds and of course Drake survives things no other person could while seeing things most people have not seen for hundreds of years. The ancient puzzles change up the game experience nicely and keep the archeological feel to the game.
Thanks for reading. I am going to go desecrate some ancient ruins now.
